The English Riviera
Metronomy
This third offering from South Devon's finest follows 'Pip Paine' and 'Nights Out' and serves to cement their burgeoning reputation as purveyors of slightly arch, Anglocentric delicately-constructed indie pop, with delicious washes of Euro-flavoured electronica.
The flavour is revisionist but very, very fresh and new. Despite numerous nods and feints to 80's New Romantics, this lot are serious players in the constantly crowded market vying for the easily distracted listener's attention.
Joseph Mount and his cohorts start proceedings off quite tentatively, with the iconic seaside sound of seagulls echoing into your ears, a lone violin plaintively drawing you inwards - and so the journey begins, a song cycle about going out, finding love and painting the town various colours of the rainbow.
'We Broke Free' builds into a quietly raging monster, a mood piece with layer upon layer of guitars, slightly distorted, always controlled, The abiding theme emerges of KEYBOARDS, a myriad of electronic sounds creating atmosphere, flitting you away, true escapism for the listener who wants to be taken.
'Everything Goes My Way' is a perfect distillation of Belle and Sebastian and Foxbase Alpha-era St. Etienne mixed into a delicious, fruity cocktail. One of the singles of the year, it positively exudes big gusts of high summer loving and dreaming within every bar of music.
What makes this LP so special is the contrast between this tune and the more robust, moody cloudbursts of songs like 'The Look', 'The Bay', 'Loving Arm' and closer 'Love Underlined'. These actively conjure up ever present memories of Euro pop, the grandeur of Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, The Associates, Human League and any number of magisterial 80's mavericks. These were the truly undervalued artists, the ones so easy to mock, put down for their apparent wierdness; yet their legacy endures...
Metronomy clearly care about this 'Golden Age' for POP and it shines through every chord of those songs and the album as a whole.
'She Wants' even encompasses a Mick Karn style bass line , all dark and doom-laden. Joseph's vocals are measured, but not without emotion , the lyrics simple yet memorable ('I call the shots / till you wake up...it's getting late and that I know/ the hours come , the hours go'). Like most of the songs, a keyboard line transports the melody to another plan; 'Trouble' is a simple lament to difficult LOVE, the arguments, the break ups, the get back togethers; its sweet chorus lightens the mood - ' they say your boyfriend lives in a bubble'.
Lead track 'The Bay' is just awesome, larger than life and joyous. It will make parts of your body move you never knew about before!! It is camp, addictive and name checks Paris and Tokyo whilst comparing them all to Torbay. The key line is ' If you want to go, i'll take you back one day - It feels SO GOOD in the bay'. You will not fail to be cheered up by its disco affectations and come away smiling,
Take this quartet to your tremulously- beating hearts. Disappointment only occurs when it ends - the solution , play again and again on repeat and marvel at the glorious POPNESS of it all!!!!
