‘American Goldwing’ is the upcoming sixth album release of the five piece band Blitzen Trapper, out on the 13th of September. Having previously heard ‘Furr’, their 2008 release I was instantly a fan. Eric Earley’s soft vocals that resonated with the country rock vibe they produced really brought to mind the old style Americana and a Don Mclean vision of the American dream. Since appearing on the Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Fallon shows Blitzen Trapper are very much on the up and are back with a bang and their brand new album, ‘American Goldwing’.

From the very first chords of ‘Might Find it Cheap’ it’s clear that Blitzen trapper have come up with something special. We are about to be lead on a real outdoor jaunt through the twists and turns of the folk-rock genre. From track one the album revives an old style for the modern music scene, classic southern rock having previously petered out with the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blitzen Trapper have bought it back with an emphatic crescendo. Their second track, ‘Fletcher’, my personal favourite, has the potential to be a true country classic. The quiet guitar and melodic keys, behind Earley’s huskily gorgeous vocals, softly waits to break out into the squeakily clean solos that no wannabe cowboy can resist tapping along to.

Entering the notoriously dangerous territory of the middle of the album, where many bands fall to pieces, Blitzen Trapper retain their coarse country feel and dial down the electronics to a safer level. Whilst you listen to this album it’s all too easy to drift off and imagine the possibility of driving down an Alabama highway with a straw hat and strand of corn in your mouth.

It’s clear that Eric, both singer and songwriter, is an obvious talent. However, something must be said for those other members, Erik, Brian, Michael and Marty, without whom the calm romance of ‘Girl in a Coat’ or the relaxed sensations of ‘Astronaut’ just couldn’t be felt. They even make the harmonica sound like a useful instrument rather than a castrated yokel, a feat not managed since... well, ever.

‘American Goldwing’ closes in the glorious sunset of the lively, ‘Street Fighting Sun’ and the more mellow, ‘Stranger in a Strange Land’, both of which hint at more 60’s rock and Bob Dylan influences.

If you’re a folk-rock enthusiast or just want that southern flavour back in your life without having to purchase a KFC bargain bucket then Blitzen trapper is the band for you. Blitzen Trapper have dragged country rock back, kicking, screaming and in most cases gently moaning and it’s just waiting for you to listen.

This is a beautifully crafted album, comprised almost entirely for the sole purpose of relaxation. Having listened and been put in the most chilled out of moods, with a beaming smile across the face you’ll soon be calling out for the comfy chair and Jack Daniels, with which to truly appreciate Blitzen trapper.

Blitzen Trapper is an experimental rock/folk sextet which formed in Portland, Oregon, United States in 2000. The band consists of Eric Earley (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Erik Menteer (guitar, keyboards), Marty Marquis (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Michael Van Pelt (bass), Drew Laughery (keyboards) and Brian Koch (drums, vocals). In various combinations and guises, the group had already played a long time together before the "crystalization event" in July 2000 on the slopes of the famous volcano Mt. Hood.
