Eddie Cohn - Lights On (The Dan Silver Sessions Remix) Review

Lights On (The Dan Silver Sessions Remix)

Eddie Cohn

Release Date: 11th Oct, 2011
Label: Independent
Genre: Electronic Club

October 11th welcomes the arrival of Eddie Cohn’s remix EP. Nephew of the acclaimed Marc Cohn, renowned for his classic ‘Walking in Memphis’, Eddie certainly has a lot to live up to. However, whilst his uncle was a folk-rock legend Eddie has recently spiralled in a different direction towards the flashing lights and electronic squalls of club mixes.

Having recently returned from touring the Pacific Northwest to work on his upcoming record, we are afforded a sneak peek at this club remix for ‘Lights On’ and with the talents of both Eddie and Dan Silver in full swing this is something to get excited about.

‘Lights On’ is a gentle journey through soft electronic mastery. A start which enters like an action hero in a Marvel Comic movie with thudding electronic heartbeats and an air of vibrating uncertainty, from the get go we’re aware of something special. Departing from the deep bass introduction the song is able to take off. Eddie’s purring vocals, accompanied with the effects of electronic interference allure you into an almost catatonic stupor. His quietly enticing and sexy speech create an atmosphere of heady relaxation, an oxymoron normally only seen in the nightclubs of French car or special liqueur adverts.

The heavy bass feel that immersed the start gradually dissipates over the course of the track. The deep troughs of electronic bass and drum effects give way to crests in exquisite high chiming guitar that literally lights up the music and a more rapid tempo in both Eddie’s lyrics and temperament. Whilst the deepness is still well appreciated the excitable instrumental peaks are the stand out element of this track.

As Eddie’s words ebb, flow and slow towards the end we’re left with the companions of introspection and reflectivity that all good mellow club mixes should provide. Whilst it’s easy to get carried away with Eddie’s seemingly melancholic lyrics one cannot and should not overlook Dan’s instrumental ability which alone allows the track to be more than just your average release.

This track is not what is expected from one glance at the cover and title. It is not dance club music in the traditional sense, but then again it’s not trying to be. ‘Lights On’ conjures images of sweet Absinthe fuelled nights of helpless twisting in a calm Belgian discotheque. If you seek the punching, raving club music of East London then perhaps Eddie is not for you, but for the discernible chap with the taste for clubbing in soft night-time lounges ‘Lights On’ is a tune to be rivalled.

One can only hope that the rest of his EP and future work can maintain this level.

About The Artist

Eddie Cohn

For the last three years, Eddie Cohn has been knee deep in writing, recording and breathing his new album entitled “If I’m Happy It Ends.” Originally from Cleveland, OH, Cohn moved out to Los Angeles about ten years ago to pursue a career in music. He spent years writing and recording demos, writing songs for independent films and even received a development deal at Columbia Records. However it hasn't been until his new record 'If I’m Happy It Ends' where Cohn feels like he is truly being heard for the first time. As you listen to Cohn’s lyrics, you can hear that his uncle, singer/songwriter Marc Cohn, has always been a dynamic influence on his songwriting. And as you listen to the music combined with Cohn’s whispering and soaring voice, you can also hear traces of his other influences including Radiohead, Elliot Smith, Aqualung, Pearl Jam and Jeff Buckley.
