Sudanese Playboys - Raised on Alcohol EP Review

Raised on Alcohol EP

Sudanese Playboys

Release Date: 19th Sep, 2010
Label: Independent
Genre: Alternative Rock

Unsigned and looking for some action, this collective are making moves in the right direction. Hailing from Enfield, North London, Jamie, Mem and Big Daddy Steve have linked up with a group of like-minded followers to ply a refreshing blend of indie grooves embellished with horns and multi-layered vocals.

The production is accomplished, recalling late 80's / early 90's godheads like the Wonderstuff (but less edgy) with a righteous emphasis on melody and driven by a desire to write proper songs, which after 6 or so plays, start to lodge nicely in your subconscious.

The sleeve art depicts a para holding an acoustic guitar - this encapsulates their modus, disciplined and well constructed, folksy but not earnest, with a sense of fun. They create layers, a sound collage, the verse chorus verse chorus hegemony neatly sidestepped with streaks of originality.

What helps is they are not trying too hard to please or show off their musicianship - all 4 tracks on this EP have a distinct sound and atttitude: ego free, talent subsumed within the whole, for the greater good, cohesive and striking the correct balance between artistry and the need to push a commercial sheen towards the casual listener.

Sudanese Playboys don't have to try that hard. They can write, they fill their glass half-full with tumbling choruses. Let us hope they take over the odd festival stage this hot summer and leave you and yours smiling.
