Back To Bad Habits
Silver Magic Ships
‘Silver Magic Ships’ are a five piece band from Manchester composed of Jonathan Print – songwriter and rhythm guitar, Stephen Bennett – lead vocals, Roger Chard – lead guitar, Craig Bennison – Drums and Chris Tollet – bass.
The band, formerly known as ‘Relapse’, have over the past couple of years played at some of the nation’s top venues, created an enjoyable back catalogue of songs and have crafted a supposedly highly enjoyable live experience. In addition, the band won the JAR Music Industry Showcase at the Manchester Academy in 2010.
Their new EP ‘Back to Bad Habits’ is a release from a band obviously highly determined to make their mark on the indie/dance-rock music scene. From the very first chord of ‘Back to the Drawing Board’ they bring out a fast paced and punchy vibe, the high volume lyrics are matched and steadied by the constant melodic slaps on the guitar and drums. With some skilful guitar work and the introduction of a slight change of pace we are introduced to ‘My Time Here’ which is much the same as the first song but with a slower and a slightly more mellow touch. ‘Crossfire’ brings in a slightly more electronic feel to their music and although there seems to be a faltering in the originality and ambition of the lyrics the pace and repetition help to give this song an easily memorable feel. The finale of the album, ‘Soul Shines Through’ is more acoustically focused with an almost electric-folk feel. This lends the EP a beautifully chilled air in which it leaves the audience wanting more.
This collection, albeit only four tracks, provides a great insight into this Manchester born band. The indie melodies give an easily listenable soundtrack to everyday life and evoke a feeling of happiness inside that brings a smile to the lips with ease. It is music that seems effortless and not at all focused on screaming a message or fighting for attention. This in itself is commendable, that such a laid back and un-distracting EP can still be noticeable and highly enjoyable. Silver Magic Ships are certainly a band worth having on your MP3 player, with the feeling of a ‘James’ and ‘Stereophonics’ hybrid these boys way well be a future force to be reckoned with.
