We Are Augustines - Chapel Song Review

Chapel Song

We Are Augustines

Release Date: 18th Feb, 2011
Label: Unsigned
Genre: Alternative Rock

Sounding like the same vein Gaslight Anthem, the National and Arcade Fire have come from, We Are Augustines present this charming track off their forthcoming album ‘Rise Ye Sunken Ships”.

Like the album title, bittersweet are the vocals of Billy McCarthy in this song 'Chapel Song', “Tear off the photograph because it’s a bright blue sky”. Emotion bleeds from this record, it’s about the pains of life and the sun rising the next day and life having to carry on. Guitars kick in, crying as they boldly resonate, then die as a synth melody follows, giving a cheek for the musical tear to roll down. Brass kicks in, like sunlight hitting the face of the track. The drum and percussion wills it all along. It’s a simple formula, a battle-cry for lost love, navigating the painful passing of time.

This is promising, and having shared stages with the likes of the Flaming Lips and the aforementioned National as Pela, this talented pairing are obviously respected by their peers. A criticism could be leveled that this breaks no new ground walking along the same line as many other American song-smiths, but it’s from the heart of McCarthy and that should be commended. It’s a grower, but it grows nicely.

Feel that the 3 star rating is a bit harsh. Music wise they might sound similar to other bands out there, but the voice and lyrics of McCarthy are far superior.
