Blood Red Shoes - Fire Like This Review

Fire Like This

Blood Red Shoes

Release Date: 1st Mar, 2010
Label: V2
Genre: Indie

Following in the footsteps of other musical duos such as The White Stripes, The Ting Tings and...Chas N’ Dave, come Brighton two-some Blood Red Shoes. Taking their cues from bands such as Nirvana, Pixies and Sonic Youth, these influences are not easy to see on this second album, however their rock credentials are unquestionable – it’s a surprisingly deep sounding album for a duo to have created. Album opener ‘Don’t Ask’ is a great introduction to the band’s sound, which culminates in the seven-minute ‘Colours Fade’ – the band ‘turning things up to eleven’ with great results. In-between are curious and intriguing songs such as ‘When We Wake’ and ‘Heartsink’ which sounds like a distant relative of The Automatic’s indie anthem ‘Monster’. An encouraging second album from a band with a lot to offer.

About The Artist

Blood Red Shoes

Consisting of Steven Ansell (vocals and drums) and Laura-Mary Carter (vocals and guitar), they formed in Brighton, 2005 after their previous bands (Cat on Form and Lady Muck respectively) had broken up and they decided to "have a jam". They have performed many, many live shows to date and initially released four 7" records on different independent labels (Jonson Family, Try Harder, Abeano/XL, Drowned in Sound). They were signed to V2 with whom they released the singles It's Getting Boring By The Sea (June 11, 2007) and I Wish I Was Someone Better (October 29, 2007). Their debut album Box of Secrets was finally released in April 2008 on Mercury Records, where they were transferred to following the sale of V2 to Universal. Their second album Fire Like This was released on 1 March 2010 to critical acclaim. The single It's Getting Boring By The Sea is featured on the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Intensity; the best way to sum up a fantastic album. As the comments below agree this album has a stronger sense of maturity and depth than their debut album 'Box of Secrets'. Laura-Mary Carter is a force to be reckoned with vocally whilst Steven Ansell is savage in both his drumming and singing. Loud, catchy garage rock at it's best.

and at the few people who say it's a "prolongation" of the first album: be happy this time the 2nd album is not more into mainstream and pop, but rather rockish :D
