The Calcination of Scout Niblett
Scout Niblett
Many may not be familiar with Scout Niblett (aka English singer-songwriter Emma Louise Niblett) whose brand of vocals and guitar are very much in the White Stripes camp of lo-fi, D.I.Y. rock. Influenced by the likes of Mudhoney, Sonic Youth and Nirvana, there is a latent rock feel running through her compositions, as well as a relaxed blues feel, the driving, bass-like guitar carrying her floating vocals on songs that have been stripped of all unnecessary instruments. This minimal approach, while keeping the overheads down perhaps, does mean that actual melodies are for the main part jettisoned in favour of random strums of guitar and Pinter like dramatic pauses, which can grate after a while – a shame, as perhaps moderate use of a backing band would inject a bit more life to songs that ultimately sound like half formed ideas and demos.
