Holly Miranda - The Magician's Private Library Review

The Magician's Private Library

Holly Miranda

Release Date: 22nd Feb, 2010
Label: XL Recordings
Genre: Indie

The first full length solo release from the lead singer of the Jealous Girlfriends, Miranda rides in on the coat-tails of a raft of other female singer-songwriters hoping to strike it big. Recorded with TV On The Radio’s Dave Sitek, this is a quirky collection of tracks all recorded inside a month at Sitek’s Brooklyn studios. From the creepy children’s TV show theme feel of ‘Forest Green Oh Forest Green’ to the ethereal, stomping final track ‘Sleep On Fire’, this is an album that glides by quite happily, unfortunately without grabbing you by the neck in terms of standout moments. Miranda’s voice is certainly versatile, and the beguiling music contained within gives the whole album a spooky, timeless feel, yet disappointingly there’s little that remains stuck in the brain after its come off the stereo.
