The Magnetic Fields
The band who brought us the ambitious 1999 triple album ’69 Love Songs’ are back with another album full of ukulele, banjos, accordions and more to create a summery, carnival atmosphere. The concluding part of the band’s ‘no synthesiser’ trilogy (following the ‘I’ and ‘Distortion’ albums that preceded it), it’s a delightful collection of songs that could almost pass as lullabies. The folky ‘We Are Having A Hootenanny’ could be an alternative theme tune for rural comedy shows like ‘Jam And Jerusalem’ or ‘Last Of The Summer Wine’, whereas the child-like fascination continues on tunes like ‘The Dolls’ Tea Party’. It might be a wee bit fey for some, who might prefer a bit more meat to their songs, but for anyone wanting an album for those stressful ‘headache’ days, this could just raise a smile and make you realise ‘hey...the world ain’t so bad’.

Hah, didn't meant to start an emoticon fest. Yeah, it's totally underrated. I was guilty of that, until it started coming up on shuffle and I realised every song sounded like a Magnetic Fields classic.
Overrated tag? Fuck you, if anything it doesn't get enough love.
post-69 love songs, still fun.
