Greatest Hits & More
The Who
A new compilation for one of the most enduring rock ‘n’ roll bands this country has produced. The problem with most ‘greatest hits’ albums is simple overkill; the same tracks in different track-lists but ultimately offering nothing new or different. This career spanning collection does the job admirably, showcasing the early Mod beginnings of ‘I Can’t Explain’ and the perennial anthem of youth rebellion ‘My Generation’ through the rock-opera years of ‘Tommy’, ‘Who’s Next’ (the result of an unfinished concept-album called ‘Lifehouse’) and ‘Quadrophenia’, and into the wilderness of the late 1970s, when the band lost one of the greatest ever drummers in Keith Moon to a drugs overdose, and experienced a decline in their success. Thankfully, a resurgence has taken place in recent years (albeit without legendary bassist John Entwistle, who passed away in 2002), and today The Who are still recording and performing live. With an extra disc of mostly unheard live material backing up this impressive curriculum vitae, this acts as both a firm testimony of their rock credentials, and a perfect start-point who youngsters wondering: just who The Who were, and why Dad has so many of their albums. Classic stuff indeed, recommended most highly.
